![]() ![]() There are more scenes were we see him being emotional brought down by his inability to be with his daughter and his inability to have his former life back. As Roger Ebert put it, "'Oldboy,' by the Korean director Park Chanwook, watches him objectively, asking no sympathy, standing outside his plight." In this movie, his emotional struggle is put at the forefront. In the original, the director puts less emphasis on the emotional struggle of the character and puts more focus on his actual situation. Unlike the original, it feels as though we are supposed to have a bit more sympathy for his character instead of looking at his situation with an unbiased point of view. He is very believable as a man standing on the edge of sanity. Josh Brolin, although not as good as Min-sik Choi, does a pretty good job. To sum it up: Oldboy's biggest problem is that it's a good movie that happens to be a remake of an amazing movie. I'm a bit lazy, so I'll just copy & paste what I said in another thread. I would definitely like to see a director's cut before I officially shut all doors to this remake.Īnother thing I liked about this remake was all the blood and guts. I thought acting was terrible by Josh Brolin in this scene also. In this version, it felt like less than 12 minutes. The ending scene in the 2003 version within WooJin Lee's apartment was around 30 minutes. In the original OldBoy, the ending is revealed in a very slow methodical manner allowing you to really take in what happened. Rumors around the web are saying the original cut was much longer and the studio made Spike cut it down to 2 hours. You could tell a bunch a meat was missing from the story from the editing. The film begin to sort of flow down hill after he tortures Sam Jackson's character. I also thought they brought a new flavor to the prison sequence. They did a good job showing how much of a dick Joe Doucett was. Honestly, I thought the film started off pretty strong. After he is suddenly released, he goes on a mission to find the person responsible for his imprisonment, later discovering that his life is still caught in conspiracy and torment. Synopsis: Joe Doucett, an advertising executive, is kidnapped and held prisoner for twenty years in solitary confinement. You are free to post those comments anywhere else, just not here.
